NEW YORK, N.Y. - OK, it is done.Rex Ryan and John Idzik are out with the Jets. The Bears canned Marc Trestman and Phil Emery. Mike Smith was fired in Atlanta. It wasnt as bloody as some past Black Mondays, but the axe swung swiftly on them. Throw in the two coaching openings in the Bay Area, and theres plenty of searching ahead for team owners in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco and Oakland. What should they look for and who might fit the bill? Lets look.NEW YORK JETSA wise former football writer always stressed that the most important position in pro football is owner. A case in point, hed say, was this team, which has fallen short in competing with the local rival Giants, whose ownership is considered among the most stable, patient and insightful. Two years after hiring Idzik, owner Woody Johnson fired him, in great part because the talent level has fallen so precipitously in the GMs short regime. It was Idziks work in free agency and the draft — of course, Ryan had a hand in those moves, too — that doomed him when the Jets went 4-12 and missed the playoffs for a fourth consecutive year.New York needs to solve its quarterback woes first, particularly because there is some talent elsewhere on offence. It should seek a head coach or offensive co-ordinator who has a history of success grooming QBs.And it should get a GM with experience in the job who can deal with a flighty owner.ATLANTA FALCONSSmiths tenure hardly was a flop. His 66 wins in seven seasons are the most for any Falcons coach, including five straight winning seasons; the Falcons never had even two successive winning records before he arrived. But Arthur Blank, considered one of the better owners in the league, not only saw a 10-22 record in 2013-2014, but the no-show against Carolina on Sunday with the division title on the line.Living in a weak division gives the Falcons a quicker chance to turn it around, but they need a running game to complement the passing offence, and they need drastic improvement on defence, supposedly Smiths strength.Blank indicated there could be other changes, and GM Thomas Dimitroff could be in trouble. For now, look for Atlanta to grab someone a bit more fiery who can mend the defence.Did someone say Rex Ryan? Probably not.CHICAGO BEARSThis one is a total mess, in some ways similar to the Jets situation. The biggest issue is leadership, and that permeates the entire organization.Emery committing to quarterback Jay Cutler for seven years and putting the team on the hook for $54 million guaranteed ($36 million remaining) has become an albatross for the organization. The new GM must seek a trading partner — highly unlikely — interested in a volatile player with a huge cap number and a history of underachievement.Or that general manager, who likely will need to work some salary cap magic, might have to swallow hard and keep Cutler. So the new coach, same as the old coach, had better be a QB guru, and one who rules with more of an iron fist than did Trestman.OAKLAND RAIDERSDennis Allen was fired early in the season, and Tony Sparano managed to win three games with an undertalented team. So many of the free agency moves by GM Reggie McKenzie backfired; that same wise former football writer said McKenzies signing built a powerhouse for 2009, not for 2014.Raiders owner Mark Davis would like to make a big splash, and was enamoured of the idea of persuading Jim Harbaugh to cross the Bay. Barring that, and with the co-ordinator promotion route not working since Jon Gruden left, look for Davis to go after a well-known coach who also could get personnel control.Should he keep McKenzie, Davis might even turn to the fiery Ryan to inspire a dispassionate bunch.SAN FRANCISCO 49ERSThe jewel of the open jobs, although some might wonder why if a coach such as Harbaugh couldnt stick it out there with so much success during his tenure. Given the discord that helped ruin a talented teams season — as did injuries — GM Trent Baalke and CEO Jed York might be in the market for someone less independent. For continuity, the Niners could opt for promoting popular line coach Jim Tomsula, a loyal soldier. And, sorry to sound like a broken record, but whoever takes over must reverse the regression of the quarterback, Colin Kaepernick.___AP Sports Writer Dennis Waszak Jr. contributed to this story.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLAmani Hooker Jersey . -- Derek Jeter spoke for 25 minutes, 44 seconds and answered 26 questions about his decision to retire at the end of this season. The third-year Timbers, playing in their first MLS post-season contest, need just a draw in Wednesdays second leg at Portland to advance to the conference finals. Osvaldo Alonso scored in the 90th minute for the Sounders, who need to win the second leg by at least two goals to win the aggregate total and advance. If the Sounders outscore the Timbers by one goal in the second match to even the aggregate total, there would be overtime to decide the series. Diego Chara started the play that led to Portlands first goal with a long pass toward the right side. Jack Jewsbury was on the receiving end and took it deep into the corner.dddddddddddd He crossed it into the penalty area, and Johnson, cutting across goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemanns 6-yard box, flicked a header that went off Hahnemanns hands and into the far side of the net early in the 15th minute. Johnsons goal was his 10th of the year for the Timbers, who went unbeaten through their last eight games of the regular season (5-0-3) to secure the Wests No. 1 seed. Nagbe made it 2-0 in the 67th minute. Kalif Alhassan, playing on the right side, sent the ball into the box. Nagbe spun around a Seattle defender and parked a shot past Hahnemann into the left side for his 10th of the year. Alonso got one back for Seattle late after a long throw-in by Brad Evans was re-directed by Shalrie Joseph out to Alsonso, who drilled it in past Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts from 14 yards straight in front for his first of the season. Prosecutors countered that they can show Hernandez was with Odin Lloyd when he was shot and that Lloyds killing was part of a pattern of Hernandez committing acts of violence following nightclub disputes. Also Monday, the former tight end pleaded not guilty to charges that he attacked a handcuffed inmate and threatened to kill a guard and his family while at a county jail in Dartmouth. Hernandez faces murder charges in Lloyds June 17, 2013, slaying, as well as a separate case in which he is accused of gunning down two men in Boston in July 2012. He has pleaded not guilty in each case and is being held without bail. Judge E. Susan Garsh will rule at a later date on the motions to dismiss the Lloyd murder charge and to suppress certain evidence gathered by the state, including cellphone records and surveillance video from dozens of cameras at Hernandezs North Attleborough home. The judge on Monday also floated a possible trial date of Oct. 6, and she set a July deadline for the New England Patriots to respond to the defences requests for access to the football teams personnel records. Hernandez defence attorney James Sultan called the prosecutions evidence "woefully lacking" and maintained that the state has yet to suggest a specific motive for Lloyds killing. "Theres certainly a lot of what I would call smoke. No doubt about it," Sultan said. "But you cant throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and say, Well, thhats good enough.ddddddddddddThats not probable cause that he committed the crime." Prosecutor William McCauley countered that the state has "powerful" evidence against Hernandez. In what amounted to a preview of the states arguments, he said toll booth, surveillance, GPS and cellphone records clearly place Hernandez in the car with Lloyd at the time of his murder. McCauley said the states evidence also shows Hernandez had the "presence, knowledge and intent" to see the murder to its completion. Prosecutors also suggested incidents in Boston, Providence and Miami show a "common pattern" of violence by Hernandez following disputes at nightclubs. But Hernandezs lawyers pushed back against that notion, saying it was part of a persistent attempt to trash Hernandezs character. They criticized prosecutors for their focus on his "affinity for guns," his drug use and past run-ins with law enforcement. Lloyd had been at a Boston nightclub with Hernandez and others days before his bullet-ridden body was found about a half mile from Hernandezs North Attleborough home. Prosecutors in Boston have said a spilled drink in a nightclub led Hernandez to kill two people in a drive-by shooting. Another Hernandez associate, Alexander Bradley, has filed a civil lawsuit alleging Hernandez shot him in the face on Feb. 13, 2013, after they argued following a visit to a Miami strip club. Dressed in a blue blazer and khaki dress pants, Hernandez sat passively through Mondays nearly three-hour court hearing, one of the longest since his arrest last year. His mother and other supporters sat in the audience, as did Lloyds mother and others. James Loney went 3-for-3 in the win, with David DeJesus and Yunel Escobar each collecting two hits and a run scored for the Rays. Jacoby Ellsbury finished 3-for-5 and scored twice for Boston, which had outscored its AL East rival by a 19-6 margin in the previous two meetings, while David Ortiz had an RBI single in the loss. Buchholz grinded through six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out five. Boston is still firmly in control of this series, though, as teams up 2-1 in the Division Series format have gone 35-8. "They are a resilient team. They said all year long they were going to keep coming," Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino said. "And were still up 2-1. We are still in the drivers seat, we control our own destiny. We just got to go out there (Tuesday) and try to win another one." Getting the call for the Red Sox on Tuesday will be righty Jake Peavy, who has won his last three decisions, but hasnt pitched since Sept. 25. "Just doing everything I could possibly do to keep that feel," said Peavy, who has lost his only two postseason starts and has pitched to a 12.10 ERA in those outings. "If you watched (John) Lackey the other day, I think you saw the layoff caan affect your feel and command a little bit.dddddddddddd But at the end of the day, it will be no excuse. Ill get out there and figure out a way to get it done just as John did." Peavy, who will be making his first postseason start since 2006, was acquired from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline and was 4-1 with a 4.04 ERA in 10 starts for the Red Sox. "I fully expected we were going to win this game," said Peavy. "I relish the opportunity, without question. I hate this had to happen for that to happen. Im happy to be the guy." Peavys also had success at the Trop, where he is 2-0 with a 3.93 ERA. In six starts versus the Rays, he is 3-1 with a 4.91 ERA. "Hes pitched well here in (St. Petersburg)," Boston manager John Farrell said. "He got three innings of work this past Wednesday, so even though its been a number of days since his last start, were looking forward to Jake being on the mound tomorrow. Its one of the main reasons we acquired him at the deadline, is to pitch in a game like tomorrow night." Tampa, meanwhile, will turn to struggling righty Jeremy Hellickson, who endured a miserable campaign, going 12-10 with a 5.17 ERA - the second highest in the AL and more than two runs higher than last year. He also went 1-7 with a 7.53 ERA over his final 10 starts. "Every elimination game we went into feels like just another game until we get out there and see the crowd and make some plays, and then were a little more fired up. But we want to be in this situation," Hellickson said. "We know we can win three in a row. Its going to be difficult, but we know we can do it." The former AL Rookie of the Year hasnt pitched since Sept. 27, but has posted a 2.42 ERA in 17 starts when pitching on six days of rest or more. "Ive got to be better. Its not fun what I did the last two months and the first two months," Hellickson said. "Like I said, I pride myself in going out there and being consistent, and I was anything but that. It was very frustrating. "Im glad its behind me. Tomorrow is a new beginning, and I cant really dwell on what I did in the regular season too much. It wasnt my best, but I get another chance tomorrow." Hellickson went 1-0 with a 3.44 ERA in three matchups with Boston this season. Tampa actually beat the Red Sox in seven games back in 2008 to advance to the World Series in the only other postseason series between the clubs. There was an expectation that the three young speedsters would create a significant advantage for Vancouver, but Montreal did an excellent job of denying all three players time on the ball and space in which to operate. The midfield partnership of Patrice Bernier and debutant Gorka Larrea hustled and harried Morales, Gershon Koffie and Matias Laba, preventing the Whitecaps midfielders from finding their intended targets. Montreals central defensive partnership of Matteo Ferrari and Heath Pearce did an excellent job of marshaling Hurtado and, with little support from Mattocks and Manneh, Vancouvers front man endured a frustrating night. After scoring a goal in each of his last four games for the Whitecaps, Hurtado failed to trouble the Montreal back four. The Impact could have come to Vancouver to ‘park the bus – put as many players as possible behind the ball, hope to keep a clean sheet and steal a point on the road. While that was the ultimate outcome of the match, Montreall looked the more dangerous side in transition.dddddddddddd Both Issey Nakajima-Farran and Maxim Tissot provided service to Andres Romero and Jack McInerney, whose movement was superb. McInerney caused problems for Vancouvers central defensive partnership of Andy OBrien and Johnny Leveron all night and, if the Impact had been a little more precise with their service to McInerney, he may very well have provided the breakthrough that the visitors needed. In the second half, Montreal hit the post through McInerney and the bar through Tissot, and may consider themselves unlucky not to have come away with all three points. But they had goalkeeper Troy Perkins to thank for keeping the score 0-0 at the other end, as the Montreal shot stopper made a number of fine saves in the second half. The pick of the bunch was a fantastic tip around the post from a low, driven Morales free kick that seemed destined to find the bottom left corner of the Impact goal. The Positives The Montreal Impact have had a difficult season in MLS. With just two wins to their credit – none coming away from home – most observers felt that a home win was as close to a sure thing for Vancouver as possible. But Montreal were solid defensively, nullified the pace of Vancouvers front three and looked dangerous in transition. Given the number of players unavailable to Frank Klopas, Montreals coach has to be pleased with a point. Both goalkeepers were excellent for their respective teams. David Ousted and Troy Perkins each made a number of reflex saves to keep a clean sheet. The Negatives Vancouver failed to live up to the high standards they have set for themselves on home soil this year. Their build-up play was methodical and, far too often, their passes failed to reach their intended target. Apart from Ousted, there wasnt a single player who played up to his potential. The message from Carl Robinson will be a simple one - chalk it up to a bad day at the office and move on to the next game. The Star Man While both Ousted and Perkins were superb, Perkins just shades it for his second-half performance. Vancouver threw everything they had at the Montreal goalkeeper, who dealt with everything in his stride. The Vancouver Whitecaps travel to Colorado on Saturday, June 28 to take on the Rapids (TSN, 6pm PT 9pm ET) while the Montreal Impact host the Houston Dynamo on Sunday, June 29.
