NEW YORK -- Paul George and the Pacers were down and just about out, seconds away from consecutive losses. Once a late foul call gave him a chance to tie it, he wasnt letting Indiana lose it in overtime. "I wanted to attack," he said. George made three throws to tie it with 5.2 seconds left in regulation, then scored nine of his season-high 35 points in the extra period as Indiana pulled out a 103-96 victory Wednesday night over the New York Knicks, who dropped their sixth straight at home. New York scored the first 13 points, but this settled into a playoff-type game between teams that met in the post-season last May. And it again went to the Pacers, who bounced back from their first loss after a franchise-record 9-0 start. "Heck of a win for our guys," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "A grind-it-out kind of game. Thats sometimes when were at our best. The offence wasnt really flowing but our defence really buckled down." George Hill added 23 points and eight rebounds for the Pacers, who beat the Knicks in six games in last seasons Eastern Conference semifinals. Just as in the clincher of that series, Roy Hibbert had a pivotal block on Carmelo Anthonys drive to the basket. Anthony had 30 points and a season-high 18 rebounds for the Knicks, who looked completely deflated after they couldnt score following the free throws George made when Iman Shumpert was called for fouling him. George then put away the Knicks in overtime, keeping them winless at home since beating Milwaukee on Oct. 30 in their season opener. "I thought we had the game won," Anthony said. "And in overtime, I dont know, they just walked away with it." J.R. Smith had 21 points, and Beno Udrih scored a season-high 19 for the Knicks, including a go-ahead shot with 1:21 left in regulation when he appeared to just throw it at the rim when Anthony couldnt get free. The Knicks protected the lead through a couple of missed 3-pointers by Hill, and Anthony made two free throws for an 89-86 lead with 9.2 seconds left. Shumpert was then called for the foul on George, with replays showing what appeared to be perhaps just a slight touch to Georges arm. The All-Star sank the free throws, and Anthony missed on the other end, and Smith was off on a tip attempt. "It dont really matter what I think or what happened," Shumpert said. "They called the foul." The stunned Knicks walked back to the bench as if they had just lost -- and pretty soon, they had. George followed Hibberts block with a 3-pointer, and answered Anthonys basket with four straight points to put the Pacers in control. Last seasons winner of the Most Improved Player award said he would have deferred in similar situations in the past. "I would have looked to have someone else to be in that position or that role," George said. "This year, this time around I want to be more aggressive." The Knicks were again without injured starters Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton. Amare Stoudemire also didnt play on the second night of the back-to-back. They now go on a four-game road trip, perhaps what they need with their inability to win on their home floor. George was two shy of his career high, bouncing back well from a season-low 12 points on 3-for-14 shooting in a 110-94 loss at Chicago that ended Indianas perfect start. The Knicks jumped to a 13-0 lead while Indiana missed its first seven shots. The Pacers were only 5 for 20 in the first quarter, but one of the makes was Hibberts ugly, banked 3-pointer that beat the buzzer and cut it to 19-14. New York was ahead 42-37 at the half and never trailed by more than four until overtime. The teams were evenly matched last season, only minutes from heading to a Game 7 until Hibberts sensational, momentum-shifting block on Anthonys dunk attempt late in Game 6. Indiana went on to force Miami to seven games in the East finals and is intent on doing better this season. As for the Knicks, they are 3-8, unable to match their strong start last season, certainly not able to keep pace with Indianas blistering start. This was a much better performance from the Knicks, who had been critical of their own effort and were coming off a loss in Detroit a night earlier, but not good enough. Notes: Metta World Peace returned, saying he had fluid drained from his left knee twice in recent weeks. ... Danny Granger is with the Pacers on their trip that concludes Friday at Boston, but Vogel said Granger is still experiencing soreness in his left calf and wont practice until that is gone. Prosecutors countered that they can show Hernandez was with Odin Lloyd when he was shot and that Lloyds killing was part of a pattern of Hernandez committing acts of violence following nightclub disputes. Also Monday, the former tight end pleaded not guilty to charges that he attacked a handcuffed inmate and threatened to kill a guard and his family while at a county jail in Dartmouth. Hernandez faces murder charges in Lloyds June 17, 2013, slaying, as well as a separate case in which he is accused of gunning down two men in Boston in July 2012. He has pleaded not guilty in each case and is being held without bail. Judge E. Susan Garsh will rule at a later date on the motions to dismiss the Lloyd murder charge and to suppress certain evidence gathered by the state, including cellphone records and surveillance video from dozens of cameras at Hernandezs North Attleborough home. The judge on Monday also floated a possible trial date of Oct. 6, and she set a July deadline for the New England Patriots to respond to the defences requests for access to the football teams personnel records. Hernandez defence attorney James Sultan called the prosecutions evidence "woefully lacking" and maintained that the state has yet to suggest a specific motive for Lloyds killing. "Theres certainly a lot of what I would call smoke. No doubt about it," Sultan said. "But you cant throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and say, Well, thhats good enough.ddddddddddddThats not probable cause that he committed the crime." Prosecutor William McCauley countered that the state has "powerful" evidence against Hernandez. In what amounted to a preview of the states arguments, he said toll booth, surveillance, GPS and cellphone records clearly place Hernandez in the car with Lloyd at the time of his murder. McCauley said the states evidence also shows Hernandez had the "presence, knowledge and intent" to see the murder to its completion. Prosecutors also suggested incidents in Boston, Providence and Miami show a "common pattern" of violence by Hernandez following disputes at nightclubs. But Hernandezs lawyers pushed back against that notion, saying it was part of a persistent attempt to trash Hernandezs character. They criticized prosecutors for their focus on his "affinity for guns," his drug use and past run-ins with law enforcement. Lloyd had been at a Boston nightclub with Hernandez and others days before his bullet-ridden body was found about a half mile from Hernandezs North Attleborough home. Prosecutors in Boston have said a spilled drink in a nightclub led Hernandez to kill two people in a drive-by shooting. Another Hernandez associate, Alexander Bradley, has filed a civil lawsuit alleging Hernandez shot him in the face on Feb. 13, 2013, after they argued following a visit to a Miami strip club. Dressed in a blue blazer and khaki dress pants, Hernandez sat passively through Mondays nearly three-hour court hearing, one of the longest since his arrest last year. His mother and other supporters sat in the audience, as did Lloyds mother and others. James Loney went 3-for-3 in the win, with David DeJesus and Yunel Escobar each collecting two hits and a run scored for the Rays. Jacoby Ellsbury finished 3-for-5 and scored twice for Boston, which had outscored its AL East rival by a 19-6 margin in the previous two meetings, while David Ortiz had an RBI single in the loss. Buchholz grinded through six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out five. Boston is still firmly in control of this series, though, as teams up 2-1 in the Division Series format have gone 35-8. "They are a resilient team. They said all year long they were going to keep coming," Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino said. "And were still up 2-1. We are still in the drivers seat, we control our own destiny. We just got to go out there (Tuesday) and try to win another one." Getting the call for the Red Sox on Tuesday will be righty Jake Peavy, who has won his last three decisions, but hasnt pitched since Sept. 25. "Just doing everything I could possibly do to keep that feel," said Peavy, who has lost his only two postseason starts and has pitched to a 12.10 ERA in those outings. "If you watched (John) Lackey the other day, I think you saw the layoff caan affect your feel and command a little bit.dddddddddddd But at the end of the day, it will be no excuse. Ill get out there and figure out a way to get it done just as John did." Peavy, who will be making his first postseason start since 2006, was acquired from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline and was 4-1 with a 4.04 ERA in 10 starts for the Red Sox. "I fully expected we were going to win this game," said Peavy. "I relish the opportunity, without question. I hate this had to happen for that to happen. Im happy to be the guy." Peavys also had success at the Trop, where he is 2-0 with a 3.93 ERA. In six starts versus the Rays, he is 3-1 with a 4.91 ERA. "Hes pitched well here in (St. Petersburg)," Boston manager John Farrell said. "He got three innings of work this past Wednesday, so even though its been a number of days since his last start, were looking forward to Jake being on the mound tomorrow. Its one of the main reasons we acquired him at the deadline, is to pitch in a game like tomorrow night." Tampa, meanwhile, will turn to struggling righty Jeremy Hellickson, who endured a miserable campaign, going 12-10 with a 5.17 ERA - the second highest in the AL and more than two runs higher than last year. He also went 1-7 with a 7.53 ERA over his final 10 starts. "Every elimination game we went into feels like just another game until we get out there and see the crowd and make some plays, and then were a little more fired up. But we want to be in this situation," Hellickson said. "We know we can win three in a row. Its going to be difficult, but we know we can do it." The former AL Rookie of the Year hasnt pitched since Sept. 27, but has posted a 2.42 ERA in 17 starts when pitching on six days of rest or more. "Ive got to be better. Its not fun what I did the last two months and the first two months," Hellickson said. "Like I said, I pride myself in going out there and being consistent, and I was anything but that. It was very frustrating. "Im glad its behind me. Tomorrow is a new beginning, and I cant really dwell on what I did in the regular season too much. It wasnt my best, but I get another chance tomorrow." Hellickson went 1-0 with a 3.44 ERA in three matchups with Boston this season. Tampa actually beat the Red Sox in seven games back in 2008 to advance to the World Series in the only other postseason series between the clubs. There was an expectation that the three young speedsters would create a significant advantage for Vancouver, but Montreal did an excellent job of denying all three players time on the ball and space in which to operate. The midfield partnership of Patrice Bernier and debutant Gorka Larrea hustled and harried Morales, Gershon Koffie and Matias Laba, preventing the Whitecaps midfielders from finding their intended targets. Montreals central defensive partnership of Matteo Ferrari and Heath Pearce did an excellent job of marshaling Hurtado and, with little support from Mattocks and Manneh, Vancouvers front man endured a frustrating night. After scoring a goal in each of his last four games for the Whitecaps, Hurtado failed to trouble the Montreal back four. The Impact could have come to Vancouver to ‘park the bus – put as many players as possible behind the ball, hope to keep a clean sheet and steal a point on the road. While that was the ultimate outcome of the match, Montreall looked the more dangerous side in transition.dddddddddddd Both Issey Nakajima-Farran and Maxim Tissot provided service to Andres Romero and Jack McInerney, whose movement was superb. McInerney caused problems for Vancouvers central defensive partnership of Andy OBrien and Johnny Leveron all night and, if the Impact had been a little more precise with their service to McInerney, he may very well have provided the breakthrough that the visitors needed. In the second half, Montreal hit the post through McInerney and the bar through Tissot, and may consider themselves unlucky not to have come away with all three points. But they had goalkeeper Troy Perkins to thank for keeping the score 0-0 at the other end, as the Montreal shot stopper made a number of fine saves in the second half. The pick of the bunch was a fantastic tip around the post from a low, driven Morales free kick that seemed destined to find the bottom left corner of the Impact goal. The Positives The Montreal Impact have had a difficult season in MLS. With just two wins to their credit – none coming away from home – most observers felt that a home win was as close to a sure thing for Vancouver as possible. But Montreal were solid defensively, nullified the pace of Vancouvers front three and looked dangerous in transition. Given the number of players unavailable to Frank Klopas, Montreals coach has to be pleased with a point. Both goalkeepers were excellent for their respective teams. David Ousted and Troy Perkins each made a number of reflex saves to keep a clean sheet. The Negatives Vancouver failed to live up to the high standards they have set for themselves on home soil this year. Their build-up play was methodical and, far too often, their passes failed to reach their intended target. Apart from Ousted, there wasnt a single player who played up to his potential. The message from Carl Robinson will be a simple one - chalk it up to a bad day at the office and move on to the next game. The Star Man While both Ousted and Perkins were superb, Perkins just shades it for his second-half performance. Vancouver threw everything they had at the Montreal goalkeeper, who dealt with everything in his stride. The Vancouver Whitecaps travel to Colorado on Saturday, June 28 to take on the Rapids (TSN, 6pm PT 9pm ET) while the Montreal Impact host the Houston Dynamo on Sunday, June 29.
