MONTREAL -- So much for all the excitement over the Montreal Impacts mid-season signings -- both Hernan Bernardello and Adran Lopez ended up on the injured list this week. Bernardello, the gritty Argentine who looked to have settled the teams midfield in his four appearances, will be out four to six weeks with a sprained left ankle after taking a knock in a 0-0 tie in Philadelphia last Saturday. And Lopez, a defender who had seen action in only one CONCACAF Champions League match, will be out at least six months with a right knee injury suffered during practice on Tuesday. Add to that the absence of midfielder Andres Romero on a brief paternity leave and the Impact will be shorthanded when they go on the road to face the New England Revolution on Sunday night. "Thats part of the sport and we cant spend all day crying about it," Montreal coach Marco Schallibaum said this week. "Now we have to find a solution." The Impact (12-7-6) go into the weekend in a three-way tie for first place in the MLS Eastern Conference, with two games in hand each on the New York Red Bulls and Sporting Kansas City. The Revolution (10-9-7) are in fifth spot. The loss of Bernardello, the teams second designated player after striker Marco Di Vaio, and Spanish central defender Lopez leaves them with essentially the same team as before the signings. That outfit had been good enough to put them safely in playoff position, but it reduces Montreals depth heading into a busy month of league and CONCACAF action. The toughest loss is Bernardello, who had become a key piece alongside veteran Patrice Bernier at the back of the midfield, both in shoring up the defence and moving the ball forward. "Its a pain for him too because he was doing well," said Montreal left back Hassoun Camara. "He brought a lot of stability to the midfield. But we have to work with the players we have." Schallibaum tried out different players and formations in practice this week to make up for Bernardello and Romero, who had become a regular starter on the left side in recent games. Romero returned to Argentina, where his wife was due to give birth, and is expected back on Monday. Collen Warner may move into Bernardellos spot, while Davy Arnaud should be back in the starting 11, possibly in the middle. Sanna Nyassi is another strong candidate, particularly in Romeros spot on the left side. "I feel bad for those two guys, to come into a new group and both get hurt in the same week," said Arnaud. "Its unfortunate, but things happen during a season and we have to continue moving forward." Arnaud got bumped from the lineup when Bernardello moved in and has been used off the bench in recent games. It was the first time since the team captain was acquired last year for the teams MLS expansion season that the 33-year-old has been used through a stretch of games as a substitute. "Its not easy." said Arnaud. "I want to be on the field every minute of every game. "Thats my mentality and thats who I am. That wont change. But then again, we won a game 5-0 against Houston and you cant expect too many changes after a result like that. "But I continue to do the things I do. Ill be back on the field soon enough. You respect the coachs decisions all the time, but it doesnt mean I dont want to be out there." While Lopez will not return until sometime in 2014, Bernardello hopes to be back before the end of the regular season. "At the time, I didnt think it was that bad," Bernardello said of the injury. "I tried to keep playing, but I couldnt. "I was feeling good after nearly a month with the team, so its really too bad. But theres no choice but to recover and get back in. Theyre saying four to six weeks, but me, I think I can come back earlier. I hope so, anyway." Fate has not fixed itself totally against the Impact, however. For one, they will play on a grass field, just like at home. The Revolution normally play on an artificial surface, but grass has been laid down at Gillette Stadium, mainly for a Brazil-Portugal friendly on Sept. 10. That will be a relief for defender Alessandro Nesta, who has played through a nagging groin problem. They will also have Schallibaum back after serving a two-game suspension, his fourth ban of the year, for losing his temper on the sideline against Houston. Assistant coach Mauro Biello went 1-0-1 as interim head coach. "He brings a lot of passion to the game at the sideline and as a player you feed off that," Arnaud said of Schallibaum. "Hes into the game. "The players dont have any problem with the things that have happened, to be honest, because a lot of times hes reacting to protect the players. You appreciate that." The Impact are 3-6-3 on the road this season, but they won in New England in 2012. Both teams are on three-game unbeaten runs, with New England coming off a 1-1 draw last week in Toronto. The Impact will have an eye on Kelyn Rowe, who has three goals in three games, and Diego Fagundez, who has two goals and an assist in the Revolutions last three matches. New England will be without newly signed left back OBrian Woodbine, who is on national team duty with Jamaica. The Jacksonville Jaguars made a loud statement when they selected quarterback Blake Bortles with the third overall selection at the 2014 NFL Draft. The organization went on to send another significant message last week when they named 29-year-old NFL vet Chad Henne as the starter for Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. "For our team, Chads playing well, really well," head coach Gus Bradley said. "I think hes playing really fast right now. Hes showed it all during training camp and during the preseason games, so were really excited about him." This comes as no surprise for a team that has openly admitted Bortles wont likely compete for the starting job until 2015, but its no doubt the UCF product is the future under centre. “We do feel good about where Blakes at, but we feel like this time that he has under Chad, a year to develop, will be really good in the end result,” Bradley said in May. The Jaguars have the offensive youth, but the team will be relying more on Henne and a supporting cast of vets to carry the team and its younger contingent through 2014. Henne, the Wyomissing, Pennsylvania native, has an 18-32 record as a starter and in 15 appearances for the Jags last season he completed 60.6 per cent of his passes and collected 3,241 yards to go with 13 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. But thats who Henne is. He threw a career-high 3,301 yards, 15 touchdowns and 19 interceptions with the Miami Dolphins in 2010. The team finished 7-9. "He has a strong arm and can make the throws. He tries to take care of the ball and not create many turnovers so his offence isnt put in a bad situation,” an anonymous NFL quarterback told ESPN.coms NFL Nation blog. “Hes not a quarterback that youre afraid is going to break the game open by throwing for 400 yards and five touchdowns like some of the elite quarterbacks in the league. If theyre going to win games with him at quarterback, itll be because of the players around him making a lot of plays." Anchoring the Jaguars offence is a pair of veteran receivers, Cecil Shorts III and Marcedes Lewis. Shorts III led a lackluster receiving corps last season with 777 yards and three touchdowns on 66 catches. If the fifth-year receiver can return to his 2012 form, where he collected 979 yards on just 55 receptions with seven touchdowns, then Henne will have a verrsatile target.dddddddddddd Shorts III is still finding his stride after a hamstring injury on the first day of training camp, but is ready to hit the field with his teammates. "I dont really need outside influences to get motivated about playing," he said via Fox Sports Florida. "I just want to be at my best to help the team." Another veteran providing support in the pass game is nine-year tight end Marcedes Lewis. Lewis, who has spent his entire career with the Jaguars, is coming off the second-worst campaign of his career. With just 25 receptions, Lewis managed a mere 359 yards and four touchdowns. However, his 14.4 yards per catch was his second best total since a 16.2 mark in 2009. “I definitely feel very comfortable with him,” Henne said. “I think hes doing a really good job this spring and this summer by getting open and just his big target (allows me to) put the ball in a vicinity that the defender cant get. He keeps doing good things. Were just going to keep feeding him and make him a playmaker." Its a work in progress Jaguars of all ages. NEW MITTS Shorts III and Lewis will like see most of the touches through the air, but they will be chased for playing time by a group of 22-year-old rookie receivers. USC product Marqise Lee, a second-round pick (39th) in 2014, is listed as the second wide receiver on the depth chart and is in line for the most playing time among his first-year brethren. Allen Robinson, another second-round pick (61st) thanks to the San Francisco 49ers, enters the league as Shorts IIIs backup coming off a record-setting junior season at Penn State where he caught 97 passes for 1,432 yards and six touchdowns. And undrafted rookie Allen Hurns is much further down on the depth chart but leads the NFL with 232 receiving yards in the preseason. OUT OF THE BACK Toby Gerhart sits atop the depth chart at running back for the first time in his NFL career. For his first four seasons in the league he was in Minnesota backing up Adrian Peterson. Now, as the No. 1 option in Jacksonville, Gerhart has the opportunity to reach new heights in his career. His career highs in carries (109), yards (531) and touchdowns (two) are all but guaranteed to fall in the rear view if the Stanford alum is ready to lead a ground game without living in anyones shadow. And Adrian Peterson has a big shadow.
