HULL, England -- Manchester City overcame the early sending-off of captain Vincent Kompany to beat Hull 2-0 thanks to goals by David Silva and Edin Dzeko on Saturday, keeping the team in touch with Premier League leader Chelsea. Silva curled home the opening goal from outside the area in the 14th minute, just as City was reorganizing following a straight red card to Kompany for a professional foul on Nikica Jelavic in the 10th. Citys defence, often criticized this season, held firm and Silva set up Dzeko for the second in the 90th minute. Manuel Pellegrinis team reduced the gap to Chelsea to six points with two games in hand. Chelsea plays later Saturday at Aston Villa. City was playing three days after losing to Barcelona away in the Champions League in the last 16, so the last thing the visitors needed was to be reduced to 10 men early on. But thats what happened when Kompany was dispossessed by Jelavic about 40 metres out from his own goal and proceeded to tug at the jersey of the Croatia striker. As he was the last man, Kompany had to go and, having already shown his frustration on the pitch, he kicked out at a wall in the tunnel as he walked back to the dressing room. Pellegrini reacted by dropping holding midfielder Javi Garcia back into defence alongside Martin Demichelis but the changes had no adverse effect, with City going ahead four minutes later. Yaya Toure slipped a short ball through to Silva, who curled a brilliant shot inside the post from 25 yards. Pablo Zabaleta almost doubled the lead when he sent a dipping volley against the underside of the bar in the 31st minute. From then on, it was mostly Hull on the attack, without seriously testing City goalkeeper Joe Hart. David Meyler had a goal disallowed for offside, Jake Livermore shot just wide from 20 metres and, just after the break, Jelavic didnt get enough purchase on a free kick as Hart easily saved. Fernandinho spurned a great chance for the City in the 72nd when he ran onto Silvas deflected shot, but all alone in the penalty box, he screwed a left-footed shot wide. Minutes earlier, Hart escaped a red card after motioning his head toward George Boyd after the Hull midfielder tumbled under a challenge by the goalkeeper. Hart was booked. Dzeko, playing on his own up front in the absence of the injured Sergio Aguero, grabbed his first goal in nine games in all competitions with a fierce left-foot shot with seconds left in normal time to end Hulls hopes of a point. Coming off a 6-0 drubbing at Chelsea on Saturday, Arsenal endured another demoralizing result after rallying for a 2-1 lead -- only to concede a fluke equalizer.Zinedine Zidane admitted his team had to produce a good display as they ended a run of four successive draws with a 6-1 hammering of Real Betis in Seville. There had been whispers of criticism directed at Zidane after a 100 per cent start to the campaign after four games in La Liga tailed off disappointingly, with a lacklustre draw at home to Eibar before the international break especially unconvincing. But the 11-time European champions underlined their quality on Saturday night as Isco scored a brace and there was a goal apiece for Raphael Varane, Karim Benzema, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo as they remained second behind Atletico Madrid on goal difference. I am very pleased - after four draws we had to play a game like that, Zidane said in quotes reported by Marca. We played with the necessary intensity. There are no small teams any more but we started strongly and it can be difficult for the opponent when you start that way. Real Madrid scored their fourth against Real Betis with a superb counter attack Varane headed in the opener in the fourth minute and Benzema added the second 28 minutes later, with Toni Kroos supplying both assists. Marcelo scuffed in a third from an offside position but Iscos fourth was a thing of beauty as his tap-in rounded off a lightning-fast, end-to-end team move. The former Malaga man, who had been on the periphery of Zidanes squad in the early weeks of the season, curled in a brilliant fifth after Alvaro Cejudo had pulled one back for Betis.ddddddddddddRonaldo had the final word with his second La Liga goal, bursting through on goal and powering a shot past Antonio Adan. Heres a collectors item as Ronaldo misses an open goal in Real Madrids match with Real Betis The players are good and intelligent, and we knew we had to play in that (intensive) manner. We have to be satisfied with that result and use it as a reference point for the rest of the season. To win like that away from home is not easy.On the performance of Isco, Zidane added: He did well and I am happy for his goals and his display in general. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his fourth goal of the season for Real Madrid Ronaldos form has been under the microscope and his reaction to being substituted away to Las Palmas earlier in the season was widely scrutinised, but Zidane is content with the contribution from his Portuguese superstar.I dont look at him with even a little bit of anxiety - its normal that he wants to score goals, the Frenchman added. It is important that he conveys a positive energy to the rest of the team, and I am happy for his goal.
