It appears as though the Holiday Break couldnt have come at a better time for the Montreal Canadiens this season. After a roller coaster 4-3 OT win in Nashville on Saturday night, the Habs look like a team that needs a few days of rest and relaxation away from the rink and the game. Montreal has the rare opportunity this particular season to have a stretch of seven days off in between games. In fact, they wont even return to the ice for practice until next Friday when they arrive in Tampa to prepare for a date with the Lightning. While the physical break is always enjoyed, sometimes its the mental break that can be the best thing for a player; a few days away from the arena and the game all together, spending time with family and friends to enjoy the season. Sometimes it can be overlooked how much a few days of family time can do for a player. A good example would be Daniel Briere, who has only been back to his home in Philly with his kids once since arriving in Montreal for training camp. A few days back around the Christmas tree with family can be a great recharge. Max Pacioretty will have his hands full with a new baby to welcome into the family over the break, and no doubt will enjoy a few days off during the whirlwind experience of becoming a father. Its also a case of some good ol home cooking, with several players heading home for the holidays. Ryan White said hes most looking forward to Moms cooking. The holidays also bring out memories of childhood and for players with young kids, a chance to pass on family traditions. Even though Travis Moen recalls his excitement of receiving his first shotgun on Christmas morning at 12 years old, hes not looking to pass on that tradition, saying "we live in the city now, so I cant see that," but jokes that some traditional food dishes are in order and of course the matching pajamas for the whole family. Its a mixed bag for the Habs this year, some who have family coming to Montreal while others will venture home. There are even plans which include enjoying the holidays away in a different destination to escape the madness. One of those spots include Florida, where theyll remain and await the teams arrival next week. No matter which Habs player you talk to, and what the plans are, the common theme remains the same, its all about family. Hockey players are a tight group and the dressing room is much like a family, so its no surprise that remains the focus. So, while the players take a few days off, the fans should as well. Relax, take your mind off hockey for a few days. Focus on the people around you. Spend some quality time with family and friends, and enjoy the festive season. Line combinations, statistics, and standings can take an aside for a few days to focus on whats really important. Its a long season in an Olympic year, and theres lots of hockey to still be played. Of course, theres still the World Juniors to watch on Boxing Day on TSN. And now, a few holiday notes... Id like to take a moment to thank all our team at TSN Radio 690 in Montreal. Its been a well-documented wild ride for the last two years, but things look brighter than ever for the future. There are a lot of people behind the scenes that make the station tick day to day and Id mention all the names, but fear of missing some. While you all are most likely familiar with the on-air talent, there is one name you dont hear of often that Id like to mention. He is our game night producer Marco Campagna. Hes the voice at the other end of the line every game for me, and also assembles our Saturday night montage openers. Top notch guy who never misses a game and it wouldnt be the same without him. Congratulations to our colleagues at RDS, who will remain as the Canadiens Regional rightsholder "en francais" for another 12 years. In addition to my friends Pierre Houde and Marc Denis, there are a lot of good people who work behind the scenes every game to bring a quality broadcast and its nice to see theyll still be together. The Gunners are currently the second highest scorers in the league but Wenger insists Walcott will add something extra to his team. Wholesale Air Jordan 11 . The Senators will put the busy off-season and training camp behind them when they open their regular season on the road. Pironkova, who was ranked outside the top 100 despite reaching the Wimbledon semifinals in 2010, beat three top 10 players in Sydney, 2012 French Open finalist Sara Errani, 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Kerber. Jordan 11 Clearance . Louis Blues are reportedly taking restricted free agent forward Vladimir Sobotka to arbitration. His nickname is the Belldozer. Blake Bell, the new starting quarterback at Oklahoma, lived up to the billing in his first start in Norman, throwing for 413 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 73 per cent of his passes, finishing the game with a QBR of 96.7. Bell was a situational quarterback last season, used mainly in goal-line situations due to his 66, 252 pound frame. After losing the starting gig in the spring, Bell has taken over the reins from Trevor Knight and Kendal Thompson. Under Bob Stoops, the Sooners have often been set behind centre but after losing Landry Jones and his school record 39 wins to the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL, the program needed someone to step forward. Bell seems firmly planted in the role, and it will be exciting to see what he does going forward. The Sooners have a bye week before traveling to Notre Dame to take on the Fighting Irish. A road game in front of 80,000 fans will be a much bigger test than a home date against Tulsa but its something he should be able to handle well. Bells gaudy stats from his debut as a starter were school records, which is impressive when you consider the list of quarterbacks before him, including Sam Bradford, the number one overall pick playing with the St. Louis Rams. In college, much like the NFL, its becoming increasingly important to have a mobile quarterback. Having Bell, who is used to converting short distance situations, also put up a record setting showing as a pocket passer bodes well for the Sooners going forward. An opposing assistant coach in the Big 12 was quoted as saying Bell is "an effective goal-line guy but not sure how hell do as a primary option. He might do great, but the jurys still out". After his performance against Tulsa, Bell put the rest of the Big 12 on notice and hell be a player to watch, not only against Notre Dame but also when he kicks off the conference schedule one week later against TCU. Look for The Belldozer to prove hes much more than just a flashy nickname in the weeks to come. Other quick hits from around the NCAA: - Bo Pelini may be in hot water ffor his remarks about the Cornhusker faithful but his teams performance against UCLA should be more of a concern.dddddddddddd Leading by 18 late in the first half, Nebraska was outscored 38-0 the rest of the way on their home turf. UCLA is an up-and-coming program, but that is still an awful showing in what was supposed to be a statement game for Pelini and his squad. - Kenny Guiton started in place of the injured Braxton Miller and led Ohio State to an 18-point victory at California. Urban Meyer didnt dumb down the offence at all as Guiton proved capable with 276 yards passing and four touchdowns. The Buckeyes have one more creampuff on the schedule in Florida A&M before opening their conference schedule at The Horseshoe against Wisconsin. - Jameis Winston is putting up some crazy stats for the Florida State Seminoles. Replacing EJ Manuel as quarterback was supposed to be a tough transition for the freshman but through two games, he has six passing touchdowns, two more on the ground and amazingly only five incompletions. - TCU is known for scheduling tough non-conference games in an effort to boost their rankings in the polls should they record victories. The strategy has seemingly backfired this season with losses to LSU and Texas Tech. The Horned Frogs find themselves out of the polls heading into their bye week. - Stanford beat Army by two touchdowns in an underwhelming performance for the 5th-ranked Cardinal. Army trailed at halftime by just one score and was looking to make history. Their program hasnt defeated a ranked team since 1972 – which is now 42 consecutive losses. - Butch Jones had a chance to start his coaching tenure at Tennessee with three straight victories, something that hadnt been done since 1926. How did his Vols respond? By giving up 59 points to the Oregon Ducks and losing by 45 points. - The coolest stat of the week comes from Oklahoma State. They managed a 56-point victory of Lamar, despite losing the time of possession battle by 15 minutes. For more on the college football season check out the TSN podcast each week!
